I had a lovely time last night at Sue and Sandy Craig’s Old West End home. The house was all Christmas, complete with enormous tree, carols on the stereo, good smells from the kitchen, and rambunctious children! And of course, what holiday dinner party is complete without the ubiquitous party game?
I learned a new one–Categories!
Here’s how you play.
1) Think of a word, say a five letter word (no repeat letters). For the sake of example, lets use the word birds.
2) Keep in mind that you are going to have to come up with things in a variety of categories that begin with the following letters: B, I, R, D, S.
3) Each person (or in our case, team) comes up with a category. You can take the level of difficulty as easy or difficult as the group can tolerate (or not!).
4) Set your paper up in a grid–for us, there were twenty-five squares (five letters, five categories).
5) Set a time limit for teams or individuals to work. In our case, we set it at fifteen minutes.
6) If no one else comes up with your item for the category, you get five points. One other person…4, two, three…etc. You can actually work out the point system however you like, depending on the number of people playing, etc.
The fun that ensued from this game was side-splitting, and our age spread around the table was from six to eighty-nine! How often can you find a game that every age can enjoy participating in? The children (and adults) learned a lot by playing the game as well, and we all got a good laugh at some of the answers that came up!
I think we all learned a lot about each other in a variety of ways, and not just from the answers we presented to the group.
Try it for fun!
And happy holidays!
Von Himmel Hoch (Bach) This one’s for you, Sandy!
Be well, and at peace,
Phil
